Does the sight of a child happily enjoying a quiet read fill your heart? Well, most children love to read and be read to. They only need to be shown the light.

To help shine the light on your reader, it is important to start early and start right. The foundation years often set the tone for reading as a skill and hobby. Getting the learning dynamic right at this stage will ensure that reading, writing, and spelling come more naturally to your child.

Creative Reading games and Hacks for Grade 2

By the time your child is in grade 2, there are several skills that you are looking to build. Here are some fantastic ways to make it happen:

  • Reading Bingo: Create bingo cards using words that your child is learning to read. This is best played with multiple people, so get a few children or the whole family together. Now call out a sequence of words and see how many your child can identify and cross out correctly. To increase the level of complexity for your child, make them the host and have them call out the words. That’s so much more practice!
  • The magic torch: To help bring out the magic ‘e’ concept, stick a series of words on the wall. Darken the room, and tell your child that the torch is the magic ‘e.’ Each time the child shines the light on a word, they need to convert the short vowel into the long vowel sound and read the word correctly. (For example, the word ‘car’ becomes ‘care’ when the magic ‘e’ shines on it; the word ‘win’ turns to ‘wine,’ and so on.)
  • Make me a story: Just like children love listening to stories, they are also natural storytellers. Take a simple grade-level story and help them practice reading a few lines. Now close the book and ask them to imagine what might happen next. This inspires them to get creative and breaks the monotony of reading as well.
  • Before and beyond: Give your child a series of three words. They can pick them up from a jar. Now they need to use these three words together to form a small sentence or a paragraph. A little story would be interesting too. This helps build reading skills and can also help improve creative expression.

How to Make Reading in Grade 2 Exciting

By grade 2, children are learning reading comprehension – that means they are trying to understand what is being read. What a vital stage this is! To help them build this skill, you must:

  • Discuss: The more you talk about what they read, the better they will understand it.
  • Practice: The same concepts and ideas several times over, using different methods.
  • Collaborate: This is one sure way your child will open up with their difficulties and challenges and help you understand how you need to help them.

All You Need to Know About Your 2nd-Grade Reader

A second-grade reader has already come a long way but has a long journey ahead. Every day is a new experience for your child. One may be a thrilling win, while the next may be a complete washout. Expect this kind of bumpy ride as you go along.

Importantly, make sure the bumps don’t hit your child too hard. Show them that you believe in them, and motivate them to try again. Children need constant validation, so be there to give it to them.

The best way to ensure your child continues to love reading and learning is to become a learner yourself. Play, learn, and participate so that your child does not feel isolated.

SplashLearn brings you an exhaustive range of online educational games and resources to help build ease and fluency in reading. Try these methods to make your child a healthy and happy reader.
